Otter's Bend Lodge is a unique backpackers', hikers' and travellers'lodge offering a self-catering or bed and breakfast base from which toexplore the Western Cape Winelands and Franschhoek.
Otter's Bend Lodge is situated on a farm, in the heart of theFranschhoek Valley, surrounded by wine and fruit farms. A foot trackleads you off Dassenberg Road through pear orchard down to theFranschhoek River. You will find Otter's Bend Lodge nestled in amongstpoplars, oaks and yellowwoods on the banks of a bend in the river * anature lover's dream. Its tranquil rustic ambience makes it hard tobelieve that it is only a 15 minute walk or 5 minute drive to the centreof Franschhoek village.
The log cabins and communal living area will quickly absorb you intothis "gem of a spot" where the whispering of the wind in the trees andthe rush of the river, as it makes its way round the bend, tend tocommand a peaceful silence that is appreciated by all the Otter'svisitors.
Although the Otter leaves the welcome to the humans and the domesticanimals, he makes his presence felt in his tracks left on the sand andhis pathways along the riverbank.
In amongst the orchards, with access to the communal area and pool, isthe camping area. Camping is limited to three two-man tents.

Venue: the superette next to the British Bulldog in Kommetjie - you can park in the road by the Bulldog - drive from Sun Valley into Kommetjie and you will see the Bulldog on the left hand side just before the Superette and opposite Fisherman's Pub.

Last weeks run # 1426 : Hare: Blabbermouth
THE GRAND EASTER EGG RUN
The hare announced a live run of 8 checks with 5 chicken deposits at each. Instructions were given that no one could check it out for the way forward until all the eggs at the check were found and wrappers must be returned at the end of the run as proof and by his calculation this would be 40 wrappers, well what nonsense. He also announced he had placed a spy amongst us to report any cheating.
I will never buy a cash register from this hare. he announced check 4 was a regroup but it was actually check 5, check 1 didn't exist, check 5 didn't have any eggs. you get my drift. so there were actually only 30 eggs to be found, I hope his cash registers add up better than he does.
Anyway, the run commenced 7 minutes after the Hare left ( he didn't deserve the 10 minutes he asked for) and check 2 was soon found. The Hash Hounds proved to be utterly useless as sniffer dogs and didn't find one egg between them on the whole run, clearly they prefer sniffing each others bottoms to those of chickens and Flower Power obviously prefers eating flour to chocolate.
After much faffing around 5 eggs were found and eaten and the runners and walkers all progressed to the next checks until reaching the regroup at check FIVE not 4. After consuming some green beer which Blabbermouth had finally extracted from the barrel, presumably by drilling a hole (complete with green bogies allegedly from Blabbermouth's nose, it must have been a tough job getting the beer out), the refreshed mob set off to chase the Hare down again.
At the next check several budding junior hashers appeared out of nowhere having spotted us searching in the bushes and rocks. perhaps they thought we were looking for a drug stash but they were keen to help when choccy eggs were revealed to be the target. They managed to find most of the eggs at the next couple of checks and had no problem in guzzling them all as well. Alas the Hash Hounds were useless lumps of fur.
The run finally ended and more green beer was consumed, yum yum.

And goody goody spies - yes there were more than one, in fact there were so many it would have been cheaper to give the non-spies a down down, they included Keel Over, Hermanus, Koeksuster I think and a few others
Gargoyle who had a birthday on GOOD Friday, that has to be an oxymoron
Blabbermouth again for his appalling check numbering and calculating ability
All those who didn't find an egg, once again a few too many to recall them all but included Dutch Cap, Long Drop, the esteemed RA who was trying to train the Hounds and so was handicapped
Hermanus - for arguing with the RA about the make up of the green beer - as the RA has devoted her entire life to testing as many different beers as possible she is bound to know best
